With the release of his forthcoming LP Personality set to drop on Hotflush at the end of this month, UK bass aficionado Scuba (real name, Paul Rose) gave away the B-side from “The Hope”, the upcoming 12” single from the album. “Flash Addict”, a deeply percussive number with an eerie yet somehow uplifting vibe, shows off Scuba’s masterful...

Back in November I managed to steal Andy Carthy aka Mr Scruff away from setting up for his show at Potterrow, Edinburgh, for a quick chat about his music, touring and tea.
An absolute gent I’m sure you’ll agree, and a very wise one at that. This is what he had to say.

news: mpc - back in the game?
words: matt belcher
The MPC has always been the piece of gear for beatmaking, an absolutely essential and legendary piece of kit used by the likes of Dilla, Madlib, Moodymann - and practically everyone else. However, since digital audio and software based studios came along, despite the unique MPC sound - people have tended to move on and use other bits of kit which are more practical...

review: karenn - SHEWORKS001
words: matt belcher
After talk back in September of two R&S badmen - Pariah and Blawan (collaboratively known as Karenn) starting a label together, I have finally managed to get my hands on the first release. Offering only the words “SHEWORKS001 - Cooked Up in Glasgow, Cut in Berlin” on the inner sleeve, and a rather kitsch streetlamp print on the flip which spills onto the...

Having only just realised this very evening that I missed the release of the new James Blake release Enough Thunder (by a whole 3 months..) I felt it could be quite important to scribble down a few words about a brer who has, over a very short career, produced some seriously genius records on a variety of my favourite labels, not to say anything of his beautiful self titled...

news: Bon Iver & James Blake.. wow.
words: matt belcher | photo: mostlyjunkfood
This week the collaboration of kings has been released into the interweb - Justin Vernon (AKA Bon Iver), a heroically beautiful song writer and genre-unique artist meets James Blake, his british doppelgänger in terms of musical wizardry.
Some might say these two artists have a lot in common - largely similar vocal style, same unique vibe to their...
moombahlooters?
The Birmingham Massiv have done it again. I’ve been a big fan of all things Luvstuff ever since I was up against them in the Dirty Smart DJ competition a few years back, and since then they have only gone from strength to strength.
Now, Marky (one half of Luvstuff) has teamed up with the rock solid Will Bailey in his latest collab, coming up with some real gems at the forefront of the...

beatthepulp launch at the Convenience Store
last night i had the pleasure of attending the launch of beatthepulp, a new project by designer and illustrator Kulvinder Dhillon, describing herself thusly:
“a series of illustrations, clean and dirty with precision and roughness, childishness or sexual, simplistic yet complex. Mark making with heavy pencil on paper, the starkness on the monochrome drawings are used to hallmark the...

home studio - whoopah
so i went about to doing some home studio recording the other day using my dj gear, thinking that it would be a pretty epic fail situation and not produce anything good. but oh was i proved wrong! armed with ableton and a cheap condenser mic, alongside my regular djing setup (audio 8 soundcard, horrible behringer dj mixer) i managed to acheive some of the best recordings i’ve ever done.....
what's with vinyl?
so i just watched the new native instruments teaser for traktor updates and new hardware in 2011. great stuff and pretty exciting for anyone who wants to embrace technological advances… which was when i noticed a massive irony in the art of mixing music. in no other art form have i ever come across such snobbery against new methods and technologies making things more efficient. they’re...

Anonymous asked: Just found a couple videos you posted regarding mapping in Traktor, as I just purchased my first sw based setup. Jumping right in, I picked up the new s4 Kontroler and Akai MPK keyboard. The tracks I've been able to find have been excellent... love all the element tie-ins through out and selection of samples used.

a beautiful australian film i discovered yesterday in my snowedinness. apart from the nice weather (which is uplifting to say the least amidst a depressingly british winter) clive owen’s role as the struggling single parent takes the viewer on a touching tale of self-discovery as he gains insight into his child’s grief, whilst attempting to piece back together his own life....
